Pipe Edge Milling
A pipe edge milling machine is an industrial machine used to cut the ends of pipes and tubes, preparing them for welding or other processes. It has a cutter-teeth that spins during the process and removes excess metal in order to create a desired shape.
There are several different types of pipe edge milling machines, including portable and stationary. Stationary machines offer the most machining options and are easy to integrate into automated production lines. They can machine multiple pipe or tube materials and do not require an operator.
Various types of machining are possible, including pipe beveling and U-groove seams. Other machining methods, such as chamfering, are also available.
Pipe end preparation is an essential step in the pipe joining process. It ensures that both parts fit together properly and creates a groove for a welded bead of metal around the joint. This increases the surface area of the weld site, making it stronger and able to withstand higher stress.
In addition to pipe edge milling, the mill may perform other machining processes such as counterboring, j prep and compound j prep. A clamshell cutter can be used for these processes, but the right tooling is required to achieve the correct weld prep profile.
