Steel Pipe Scarfing Removal
During tube and pipe production, weld beads on the ID and OD of a welded tube need to be removed by scarfing. These beads are formed during the rolling and welding of strip edges on a tube mill.
Conventional internal bead scarfing devices use roller heads with top and bottom rollers to maintain the cutting tool in position relative to the interior weld bead within a pipe or tube, thereby removing the weld bead during continuous travel. This process has a number of disadvantages:
(a) the internal weld bead is hot and sharp, and must be removed continuously;
(b) this continuous scarfing can damage other parts of the pipe or tube as it removes the internal weld bead, creating "weld splatter" that can contain defects, e.g. excess carbon areas, that can then be rolled or mashed onto the pipe or tube surface, creating problems with the weld bead; and (c) the top and bottom rollers are subject to wear and tear due to weld splatter and the hot temperatures involved in the removal of the internal weld bead, and require nearly continuous maintenance.
Fortunately, the invention of the present invention solves these disadvantages of prior pipe manufacturing systems and machines used to remove internal weld beads by providing a scarfing device that utilizes an adjustable upper roller to control the height of the lower roller, enabling the cutting ring to be adjusted to a desired height necessary to remove the weld bead without damaging other portions of the pipe or tube.
This new and improved scarfing device also removes the internal weld bead in a safe and efficient manner, and disposes of it in an environmentally-safe manner, without having to stop the pipe or tube during the removal of the internal weld bead.
