Gun Drilling: a Specialized Metal Cutting Process
Gun drilling is a deep hole drilling process that is effective in diameters of 1 - 50 mm [0.04 - 2.00 in]. It uses a long, thin cutting tool to produce holes with high depth-to-diameter ratios.
It is most commonly used in manufacturing gun barrels, hydraulic valves, and other precision parts. It is also known for its versatility, enabling it to be applied to a wide variety of materials and processing conditions.
The Gun Drill is a hollow drill, typically carbide tipped, with a grooved shaft through the center of its length. Coolant (oil) is forced through the drill at high pressure to provide cooling, lubrication and help clear chips from the drilled hole.
A gun drill differs from a standard twist drill in its head geometry; it is usually ground with eccentric cutting edges to improve surface finish and accuracy. This provides a more consistent and controlled machining result.
Typically, gun drilling is done with a single flute drill bit, but there are many different types and configurations available. One common option is an external chip removal bit with a notch cut in the outside of the tip. This type is more popular in gun drilling applications as it forces chips to exit along the notch and can be a good choice if you have a machine with low coolant pressures.
