How to Use a Gun Drill
Gun drill is used to make holes in parts that are difficult to drill using standard drilling tools. It was developed for drilling gun barrels, but is now being used in many other applications.
How to use a gun drill
Stand firmly on a hard surface with feet shoulder-width apart. Hold the drill with both hands for control, to prevent it from running away.
Always use a clamp to secure the work-piece before beginning a drill job. This will keep the drill from moving or hitting soft pockets and pebbles that can damage the work-piece and cause a breakage of the tool.
It can also help stabilize the gun drill and increase its life. You should secure the chuck (the black circular section on the front of the drill) to a steady rest, before placing the drill bit in it.
To keep the cutting edges clean, use a good quality coolant that is suitable for the material being drilled. It should be able to provide lubrication and cooling to the cutting edges, as well as remove any swarf or chips from the hole.
The geometry of the cutting edge affects bore surface finish, geometrical accuracy, drill centring, chip shape, process reliability and useful life. The cutting edge geometry can change according to the type of work being drilled and machining parameters, so it is recommended to consult your gun drill manufacturer for advice.
Drilling deep holes is an essential part of making and repairing metals. Gun drilling enables the creation of large, round, and straight holes in metals that are not possible with other drilling methods and tools.
