Indexable Insert Drill

Indexable insert drills, or "I-Drills," are precision tools that allow the drill bit to be changed or replaced in the tool holder. This makes them much more efficient than solid drills, which require resetting the depth after each use. This feature also makes them very versatile.

Indexable drill bits are fluted and feature mounting seats at their tip to receive the replaceable cutting inserts. The indexable inserts are rotated to reveal a new cutting edge and are replaced without having to remove the drill bit from the machine. This feature reduces the need for tool changes and saves time. These tools are ideal for high-volume metalworking and fabrication applications.

Another disadvantage to indexable drills is that they often create a slug during cutting. This slug prevents the cutting inserts from cutting stacked materials. The rotating slug can also jam the drill. As a result, the performance of an indexable drill degrades when the length to diameter ratio is large.
