Cermet Inserts for High-Speed Steel Machining
When machining high-speed steel, a cermet insert is often the most effective solution. This type of insert is able to achieve the highest surface finish with the lowest amount of clogging, while also maintaining an excellent cutting speed. However, their performance depends on their application. In the case of steel, CVD-coated cermet insert offers the best overall performance, while in another case, PVD-coated cermet grade offers excellent wear resistance and surface finish.
A cermet insert's high hardness is attributed to the high level of TiC in the alloy. TiC is a relatively hard material that has comparable hardness to carbides, nitride, and oxide. This material allows the cermet insert to achieve high cutting speeds, while being tougher than tungsten-carbide tools. In fact, the high hardness of a cermet insert also contributes to its resistance to chipping and fracturing. However, chipping still represents the most common cermet insert failure mechanism.
Cermet can be used for finishing steel and semi-roughing cuts on steel. However, some materials are not suitable for machining with a cermet. Some of these include gray cast iron, nodular and ductile iron, and non-ferrous alloys. Some materials, like nickel, can pose problems with a cermet.
A cermet is a hybrid material composed of ceramic particles fused with a metal binder. The combination of the two materials creates high toughness and wear resistance, making a cermet insert an excellent choice for cutting hard materials. This material is especially useful for applications where hard materials need to be cut repeatedly or with very close tolerances. In addition to maximizing tool life, cermet can also provide excellent machined finishes.
