A ceramic insert is an advanced cutting material that, relative to carbide, is harder and enables machining at higher cutting speeds. However, it is only suitable for a few types of applications and work-piece materials.

Typical applications of ceramic inserts include turning and milling nickel-based super alloys, hardened steel, and cast iron. Compared to carbide grades, ceramics can machine these materials up to 5-7 times faster.

The main benefits of a ceramic insert over carbide are its high thermal resistance, chemical stability in both high and low temperatures, and high edge hardness. These properties enable them to resist thermal shock, which is crucial in reducing the risk of fracture and tool failure during machining.

Recommended Grades for Machining Cast Iron

We have an extremely tough material formulated specifically for high-speed rough turning and both rough and finish milling of cast iron. The inserts are available in all turning and milling geometries and are ideal for speeds ranging from 1000 to 3800 sfm depending on depth of cut.

Pure silicon nitride-based ceramics offer superior wear resistance at high temperatures in high-speed roughing to finishing. CVD-coated grades are available in a range of wear and heat resistance from roughing to finishing for both light intermittent cuts to continuous cuts.
