Gear Milling Process
The Gear Milling Process
Gear milling is a process used to cut metal or plastic gear blanks into teeth of desired shape, length, and depth. The gear milling process can be done on a variety of different machines, including milling machines and lathes.
In this process, a gear blank is placed on the machine's worktable, and a form cutter is moved axially to cut the teeth into the blank. The cutter is removed after each tooth is cut and the gear blank is rotated to another position before cutting the next tooth.
The number of gears produced depends on the accuracy of the gear cutter and machine, as well as the stiffness of the machine. This method is usually less precise than other machining methods and is typically only used where a small quantity of gears needs to be produced or when precision is not essential.
There are two basic generating processes in gear machining: hobbing and shaping. The former is used to produce spur gears, helical gears, worms, and ratchets.
Hobbing is a formed tooth milling cutter that cuts gear teeth with a radial arrangement of fluted teeth similar to the thread on a screw. The process is capable of producing a wide range of gears from large to very small in size, and can accommodate a variety of batch sizes, though it is most often used to manufacture spur gears.
Gears are commonly manufactured using a variety of materials, including steel, cast iron, aluminum, titanium, and stainless steel. These materials are chosen for their tensile strength and durability, as well as their ease of processing. Some materials also offer higher power transmission, which makes them ideal for gear applications.
