How to Design Drilling Head With Chip Outside the Drill Head

Getting chips to move up the drill flutes and out of the hole is crucial for deep-hole drilling operations. This is especially true when the material being drilled is soft or thin, as long, stringy chips can damage the surface finish and cause tool wear or breakage.

Drill head geometries are designed to optimize the removal of chips as they travel through high-pressure coolant. They found that reducing the shoulder dub-off angle of gun drill head geometry improved chip removal performance by up to 40%.

To get the most out of your machine, check the drill speed and torque settings to ensure they are set properly. Most drills have a dial that can be turned to set the drill to a faster setting for driving screws, or to a slower setting for drilling holes in materials.
