Deep Hole Drill Head

Deep hole drill head is a special machine for drilling deep holes. It differs from drilling machines in general by some characteristic features like the drilling principle, the tool design or the achievable bore hole quality.

It is particularly important to have a proper lubricant-coolant supply in deep hole drilling. High pressure pumps supply the cutting fluid down the outside of the drill tube, between the tool and the drilled hole. The fluid pressure flushes the chips into the drill body through chip rooms, back into the hole and out of the drill pipe (the ejector effect).

In addition to the cooling system there are also special functions in the deep hole drill head to achieve better chip evacuation. These include the use of a special inner tube, which allows for back flow of the cutting fluid through the center of the tool.

A very simple and cheap method for making a depth gauge is to take a piece of tape, wrap it evenly around the bit at the desired screw-in depth, and then drill until the edge of the tape hits the surface.
