Types of Cutting Tool Holders

Cutting tool holders are an essential part of the machining process. They hold the cutting tools firmly in place and enhance their performance. The holder is a crucial component of the machine and should be thoroughly inspected and cleaned regularly.

Tool holders are available in a wide range of types, sizes, and styles. Each holder is designed to perform a specific function. For instance, a rigid holder is ideal for use with long extensions.

A holder may be made from steel, ceramic, or a harder material. Steel is cheaper, and less brittle, but is not as strong as a harder material. Compared to HSS, a harder material can offer faster material removal rates.

High speed machining applications benefit from polygonal clamping systems. These highly engineered devices clamp the shank of a tool by deforming the holder.

Hydraulic tool holders are also used for high speed machining. With a hydraulic holder, a screw is actuated by pressurized fluid inside the bore. This force is transmitted via a steel expansion sleeve.

In addition to offering high-speed machining performance, hydraulic tool holders can be used without any maintenance. They offer superior damping effects and have repeatability of less than 0.003 mm.

Other holders can be modified to fit different taper types. This can be useful for machines with taper sizes and configurations. However, if the holder loses contact with the spindle taper, the holder can suffer from loss of rigidity and accuracy.

Another type of holder uses a shrink fit. Shrink holders employ a heating and cooling process to apply clamping force. This improves a holder's hold and extends its service life.
