How to Use a Boring Bar
A boring bar is a cutting tool that can be used on a variety of materials. It is typically attached to a lathe. While not strictly a drilling device, the use of a boring bar can produce more accurate holes than a hand drill.
Generally, the diameter and length of a boring bar determine how much material it can remove. For example, a boring bar with a diameter of 0.002 inches will remove 0.0096 inches of material on a single pass. But the amount of material removed will be impacted by the type of material being cut, the feed rate, the RPM, and the depth of cut.
A boring bar is typically made of steel or carbide. The rigidity and hardness of the tool affects its cutting performance. If the material is harder, a bigger, more rigid tool is needed.
In order to maximize the performance of a boring bar, it must be selected correctly. It must also be installed properly. This includes making sure it is lubricated. An adequate supply of coolant is required around the bar's circumference. Coolant is also a good way to minimize the amount of heat generated during machining.
Another important factor is the orientation of the boring bar. A neutral orientation is safest, while an off-center orientation will cause degradation of the surface finish. When boring a hole, the distance between the center axis and the cutting edge is called the centerline offset.
The rake angle of the nose is important for minimizing the inclination of the cutting face against the imaginary line parallel to the central axis of the boring tool. Positive rake angles are used for weaker materials, while negative rakes are used for stronger materials.
