Cemented Carbide Tools
Cemented carbide tools have an excellent wear resistance because of the presence of a solid solution of titanium-tungsten carbide. This solid solution resists alloy formation with steel and significantly reduces the rate of tool wear. The wear profile of a tool shows the temperature gradient near the friction surface. This graph gives an indication of the type of wear that the tool is prone to. Typically, the wear pattern of a tool will be similar to the wear pattern of the workpiece.
Cemented carbide is a hard material that is primarily used for cutting tools. It is a composite of tungsten carbide and a tough binder metal. This combination provides a material that is extremely durable and has high hardness and toughness. As a result, it is used in a variety of cutting and shaping applications. Because cemented carbide is highly resistant to wear, it improves tool quality and increases service life. Its superior properties also make it safe for the worker to use.
During the cutting process, the tool is subjected to a high compressive and tensile stress. In severe cases, the largest of these stresses may be higher than the tensile strength of the tool material. Furthermore, the temperature at the interface between the tool and the chip is very high. It can reach more than 800 degC. These factors can significantly affect the adhesive wear.
