Counterbore Drilling in the Oil Industry
Counterbore drilling is a process in which holes are drilled in a particular pattern, such as a stepped hole or a conical hole. Typically, counterboring is performed on a piece of equipment with a single-point cutter. In contrast, boring creates a new hole by widening an existing one.
To counterbore a hole, the first step is to drill a hole larger than the pre--drilled hole. The counterbore is used to enlarge the existing hole and to install fasteners without causing a hole to separate the two pieces. In addition to drilling a new hole, counterboring creates a larger diameter hole at the head of the predrilled hole.
During this process, the drilling pipe and casing are lowered to the desired position. Then, shaped charges are fired remotely from a control truck. The jets of high-temperature gas penetrate the casing, cement, and surrounding rock. As a result, the hole is filled with oil and gas.
