How to Select Threading Insert in Steel Industry

When selecting threading insert in steel industry, there are a number of factors to consider. These include insert type, flank/radial clearance, and insert geometry. All of these have an impact on chip control, insert wear, tool life and thread quality.

First, you need to identify whether your work-piece will be internal or external threaded. Internal threads are made on the inside of a hole or rod, while external threads are created on the outside.

Next, you need to determine the thread pitch, or the distance between the threads. A fine pitch tool creates very small threads, while a coarse pitch tool produces much larger threads.

Finally, you need to consider the diameter of your pilot hole into which your threaded feature will go. If the hole is too small for your hardware, you won’t be able to install it and the screw will spin in the hole endlessly.

The best way to avoid this is to ensure that your designs specify the minor (narrow) diameter of your threaded feature instead of its major (wide) diameter. This is especially important for internal threads in aluminum alloys.

Another method to avoid this issue is to use a bottom tap when possible, as it allows the tap to get closer to the center of the hole and thus provides more room for chips. This, in turn, increases thread quality and tool life. It also helps reduce cycle time and increases overall productivity.
